Zouk is a genre of dance-oriented music from the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Zouk_sentence_1

It was pioneered and popularized by the band Kassav' in the early 1980s. Zouk_sentence_2

Zouk was originally characterized by a fast tempo (120–145 bpm), a percussion-driven rhythm and a loud horn section. Zouk_sentence_3

In the second half of the 1980s, some bands began to play a slower (90–100 bpm), more romantic style which was dubbed zouk-love. Zouk_sentence_4

The original faster style became known as "zouk béton", "zouk chiré" or "zouk hard". Zouk_sentence_5

Zouk is considered a synthesis of various French Antillean dance music styles of the 20th century: kadans, konpa and biguine. Zouk_sentence_6
